What’s a Postpartum Doula?

The role of a post-pregnancy, post-birth or postpartum doula varies from family to family. What a postpartum doula does hinges on your needs and home situation. Do you need breastfeeding counseling or support? Want to learn some ways to soothe or  bathe your baby? Need some ideas for a quick meal? Or someone to actually prepare that meal for you? How about someone to play with your toddler for a few minutes while you make a phone call or take a shower? Tender Times postpartum/post-pregnancy doula helps with all these things and more.

For first-time parents the knowledge that Tender Times postpartum doula provides is like the “instruction book that does not come with the baby.”  Second-time -and-beyond families report that doula support is a welcome set of “extra hands.” In either situation, Tender Times can help you keep your family and home running smoothly in the  exciting, but hectic weeks after a new baby arrives. Whatever your needs,  Tender Times offers all  families a wealth of experience, training and  resources.  Services include:

  • Breastfeeding support
  • Guidance and instruction in newborn care (bathing, swaddling etc.)
  • Pump use
  • Non-judgmental emotional support
  • Light meal preparation
  • Up-to-date local resources
  • Help organizing nursery/home
  • Grocery shopping
  • Errands
  • Baby Laundry
  • Sibling care
  • Pet care
  • Light housekeeping
  • Access to my library of books /DVDs
  • Free sling trial

Some of the more unusual (and fun) things I’ve helped families with as a postpartum doula have included: wrapping holiday gifts, organizing closets, helping with furniture assembly, practice shopping trips for Mom and baby. I’ve worked with new moms to  practice nursing in public. I happily  wear out the family dog playing fetch, keep older siblings fed and happy, stock the freezer with prepared meals, and have even mailed and addressed birth announcements.

What doesn’t a postpartum doula do?

  • Babysit
  • Offer medical advice or services
  • Take over care of baby
  • Heavy cleaning or housework
  • Drive you or your children in my vehicle
