Survival Tips

  1. Sleep whenever the baby sleeps.
  2. Put a " Please Do NOT Disturb--- family bonding" sign on the front door.
  3. Once your baby arrives, change the message on your answering machine. Include all the particulars-name, birthday, weight etc. Let callers know you appreciate their love, concern and good wishes and then politely announce that you'll be returning only emergency calls for a while.
  4. Accept visits from no one in the first few weeks unless they offer to do laundry, bring nutritious food and/or hold the baby while you shower, eat, cuddle with your toddler or nap (See tip #1.)
  5. Subscribe to "Caller ID" on your phone so you only need to pick up necessary calls. Turn the ringer "off" when you have the chance to nap. Cover the phone with a dishtowel to remind yourself to turn the ringer back on when you awaken.
  6. Put together furniture, stroller etc. Read the directions and learn how to operate all the new gadgets before the baby arrives.
  7. Choose and install your baby's car seat a few weeks before your due date. And then have it checked at your local police station to be sure you've installed in correctly.
  8. Sleep whenever the baby sleeps.
  9. Purchase an Infant Seat by Primo Model #321 (available for about $10 at Town & County Pharmacy in Ridgewood) saves your back and makes baby's first bath experiences more pleasant. (Measure your kitchen sink first to be sure it will fit.)
  10. Sleep whenever the baby sleeps.
  11. Hire a postpartum doula.
